Shout-Outs Around Town...

The impeccably legendary reputation of the original Corn Maiden, Joyce Carol Oates, has garnered us some shout-outs around town:

The Village Voice
New York Magazine

Stay tuned for more. And Nickey, Justin & Jess have been tapped to appear at a FringeU (educational!) event called “Behind the Production: Zombie and The Corn Maiden” with honorary Maiden Bill Connington, adaptor/performer of Oates's novella ZOMBIE (also appearing in this year's Fest) next Monday, August 18th, 6-7:30pm @ FringeCENTRAL (201 MulberryStreet). Come be one of 3 riveted co-eds!!!

THANK YOU...

...to everyone who came and corned with us, especially THE GAY AGENDA, HONGKONGATHON, SHANNA SHARP & THE BAND, SHERI MILLER, PAUL CASE and, of course, our raffle pullers extraordinaire, JUDY & JUDAS. Congrats to our winners!

...and to everyone who couldn't come but were kind enough to throw us a donation anyway. We're still accepting those, by the way. Don't be shy!

We're heading into our final week of rehearsals and our first and last week of tech -- our video, sound, animation and scenic artists have all been working separately and this is where it all starts to come together. The Maiden will be posting pictures of herself in the form of various cast members throughout the week so you'll know how to recognize her when our performance start...

THIS SUNDAY THE 17TH!!! That's right!!!

Tickets are starting to go. We'll be ready by Sunday, and we'd love to have you and your fellow theatrelovers there as part of a goodpackedpsyched first house. Here's our sked:

Coming soon to a theatre near you...

THE CORN MAIDEN is an ensemble-based multimedia stage adaptation of lauded novelist Joyce Carol Oates's brutally provocative novella THE CORN MAIDEN: A LOVE STORY. We've been accepted by FringeNYC for this August (2008) and are in the throes of assembling our cast and creative team.

THE STORY
Three Westchester teen girls kidnap their 11-year-old schoolmate to be the subject of their own version of the Onigara Indian Corn Maiden ritual.

WHY WE LOVE IT
Oates's novella is a disturbing look at the inner lives of the people embroiled in Marissa Bantry's kidnapping, from Leah -- Marissa's weak-willed single mom -- to the girls -- Jude, the 14-year-old mastermind behind the plot and her two followers, Anita and Denise -- to Mikal, the aloof 30-something computer TA and unknowing object of Jude's obsession. They all live just slightly under the radar, having built their lives on little white lies that come back to haunt them when Marissa's kidnapping unleashes a floodlight of exposure.

WHAT WE'RE DOING WITH IT
Our intrepid team of videographers will be filming Leah, Jude, Anita, Denise, Mikal and Marissa's inner lives -- their secret thoughts, hopes, dreams, nightmares and individual ways of seeing the world -- toward creating a uniquely textured theatre production that imaginatively blends video and animation with live actors and elements. Our motley crew, composed of artists from the experimental, new play, indie film, visual arts, music and musical theatre worlds alike, aims to immerse you in this story and characters in exciting new ways.
